US Renewed Strikes on Iran and Trump’s Ankara Message: A Dangerous Strategic Shift

Abbas Hashemite, July 10, 2026

Donald Trump’s decision to declare the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding “over” from Ankara, coupled with renewed military strikes on Iran, signals not merely a rhetorical escalation but a potentially dangerous shift with profound implications for Middle Eastern stability and global peace.

US Renewed Strikes on Iran and Trump's Ankara Message

Trump’s Ankara Declaration and US Renewed Strikes on Iran: A Recipe for Regional Chaos

The US President Donald Trump’s recent threat to attack Iran, his aggressive remarks about the Iranian leadership, and his declaration that the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding is over in Ankara, a geographically and politically closest regional capital to Iran, represent not only a rhetorical barrage but also carry profound significance for the entire Middle Eastern region. President Trump is known for his mercurial personality and leadership. His recent threats and statements at the NATO summit could be taken as just another aggressive burst. However, the location and timing of these statements, accompanied by mutual attacks between the United States and Iran, carry deeper significance. The US strikes on Chabahar port and Bushehr province carry even more significance for the global future and peace.
Through his recent statements and renewed strikes on Iran, President Trump has further tarnished the United States already blemished global image

Due to its role, Ankara could not be considered a neutral capital in the US-Iran war. Turkey has numerous intersecting interests with Tehran over several regional and global issues. However, in some cases, it also competes with Iran over some regional issues, suggesting that its role in relation to Iran changes according to regional circumstances and its political interests. Donald Trump cunningly chose Ankara to announce, “I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them”. He further added, “They’re scum. They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people. As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them.” In global politics, places, venues, and forums hold immense significance. Something said in Washington does not hold the same significance as the same thing said in a regional capital, especially from the NATO forum.

He chose this location for strategic signaling. By issuing these statements from Ankara using the NATO forum, he seeks to exploit the regional proximity and symbolism. He not only targeted a global audience, watching the NATO summit to evaluate the future of the US-Iran conflict and the globe, but also to redraw the contours of its policy regarding the Islamabad MoU in front of the NATO allies. Indeed, it is true that his mercurial personality and volatile statements in the past make it difficult to identify whether he will really end the peace negotiations with Iran or, just like in the past, he will once again show his willingness for a peace deal with the Iranian leadership after domestic political and economic pressure.

US Renewed Strikes on Iran: The Collapse of Diplomacy and the Return of Escalation
Trump’s repeated threats and aggressive statements make future confrontation between the two sides easier to justify. His past volatile statements and threats have framed him as an erratic, unreliable, and unpredictable leader. His recent statements and aggressive tone suggest that he seeks to convince the global audience that the Iranian leadership is the actual problem. However, his reckless and aggressive statements have made the emotional rhetoric a part of global political discourse. In addition, through these statements and recent strikes on Chabahar port and Bushehr province, President Trump has once again pushed the entire Middle East towards an all-out war, jeopardizing global peace and economic stability.

President Trump’s declaration that the MoU with Iran is over, accompanied by renewed US strikes on Iranian cities, suggests that the United States only used this ceasefire to rebuild its military capabilities in the region after strong retaliation by Iran during the past few months. Moreover, the Trump administration also seeks to use this opportunity to alter the global narrative about this war. People and leaders around the world, including US allies, condemned US unilateral aggression against Iran, calling it unnecessary and illegitimate. Even the US lawmakers criticize President Trump for attacking Iran. In a recent statement, Bernie Sanders, a US senator, stated, “Restarting his reckless war with Iran won’t make America stronger. It will cost more lives and waste more taxpayer dollars.” He further stated, “After getting the United States into a war based on lies, Trump has now declared the ceasefire with Iran ‘over’ after less than a month.”

The Middle East at the Brink: Why the World Should Be Alarmed

This demonstrates that the Trump administration would not succeed in reconstructing the domestic narrative regarding this war even after the recent developments. In addition, his move to use the NATO forum and Ankara to gain legitimacy for this war and rebuild the global narrative would also flop, as major NATO countries do not support the US offensive against Iran. However, the only thing Trump seems to achieve through his statements, threats, and renewed strikes on Iran is a more strengthened global construct about his temporal, opportunistic, and cunning personality. The recent moves have once again proved that the United States only uses diplomacy to gain political leverage.

Through his recent statements and renewed strikes on Iran, President Trump has further tarnished the United States already blemished global image. These strikes have also exposed the entire Middle East to threats of an all-out regional war. Moreover, these strikes pose a significant threat to regional and global peace and economic stability. Regional and global players need to use their influence to de-escalate the situation between the two sides. Trump threatened Iran on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara. Being a key regional player and having cordial relations with both sides, Turkey needs to use this opportunity to strengthen its role as a mediator. Pakistan, being the mediator between the two sides since the start of the US-Iran war, also needs to urge both sides to exercise restraint and adhere to the terms and conditions of the MoU. Otherwise, a mercurial leader like Trump, under the influence of his Zionist supporters, will push the entire world towards prolonged instability and chaos.
