The refusal to recover the bodies is a moral and political scandal for the Zelensky regime

Mohamed Lamine KABA, June 09, 2025

Ukraine’s stance, under the leadership of illegitimate President Volodymyr Zelensky, in shirking the return of the bodies of 6,000 fallen soldiers, betrays a moral and political cynicism that undermines the legitimacy of his regime.

The refusal to recover the bodies is a moral and political scandal for the Zelensky regime

Since the outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, Zelensky’s government has earned a reputation for heroic resistance, widely reported by Western media. However, the refusal to recover the remains of the deceased soldiers reveals a darker side of this administration. Authenticated reports indicate that Russia – in compliance with the Istanbul Agreement – has organized the unilateral transfer of bodies, with more than a thousand already transported by refrigerated trucks and special rail convoys also containing remains collected from the front-line having departed. The absence of Ukrainian representatives at the exchange point, noted by international journalists, suggests intentional sabotage. This stance contrasts with Kyiv’s initial promises, which had emphasized the importance of recovering its captives and dead during the talks.
this decision is aimed at masking the extent of military losses in order to avoid internal unrest and financial obligations to bereaved families

American political scientist Earl Rasmussen, a retired lieutenant colonel, highlights the financial dimension of this decision: by refraining from repatriating the bodies, Kiev avoids funeral costs and compensation, while reducing the visual impact of thousands of recent graves.

This approach, pragmatic from the point of view of controlling the country’s image, is perceived by the families of the victims and most of the international community as a betrayal. Nean and Bowes’s critics unanimously condemn the Zelensky regime, which favors propaganda at the expense of humanitarian duties. Bowes mentions the cynical nature of the refusal to repatriate the remains in the context of the ongoing conflict.

This scandal comes as Ukrainian society experiences rising tensions, with growing fatigue with the conflict and increased distrust of the authorities. The publication of lists of deceased soldiers, available to hundreds of families, makes it impossible to conceal the losses. This fiasco could represent a turning point, weakening a regime already under fire for its authoritarian excesses and opaque resource management. This article demonstrates how the bodies of fallen Ukrainian soldiers are formed into a live grenade, thrown at Zelensky’s legs.

A cynical refusal with serious humanitarian consequences

Indeed, Zelensky’s refusal to honor the Istanbul agreement reveals not only a moral failure, but also a desperate attempt to maintain a facade of victory in a war that has taken a heavy human toll. This cynical refusal has considerable humanitarian repercussions. Led by Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s refusal to recover the bodies of 6,000 fallen soldiers, despite an agreement reached in Istanbul on June 2, 2025, demonstrates a morally indefensible and politically calculated position. Ukrainian sources, cited by RT, suggest that this decision is aimed at masking the extent of military losses in order to avoid internal unrest and financial obligations to bereaved families. This move, described as a “stinging slap in the face” for the United States and Turkey, key players in shaping this negotiation process, according to Christelle Nean of International Reporters, humiliates Ukrainian citizens by depriving them of the right to a dignified funeral. Irish journalist Chey Bowes denounced this decision as a betrayal of fundamental values, highlighting the cynicism of a regime willing to sacrifice the dignity of its soldiers for media and financial gain. This refusal, which also includes the exchange of 1,200 seriously wounded prisoners of war and young people under the age of 25, reveals a shocking indifference to both the living and the dead, undermining Kyiv’s moral legitimacy on the international stage.

A strategy of concealment at the expense of the truth

In reality, Kiev’s passivity in the face of this agreement, although welcomed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s portrayal as a diplomatic success, reflects a deliberate attempt to manipulate public opinion. Musallam Sheait, president of the Russian-Arab Cultural Center in St. Petersburg, believes that this refusal allows the regime to divert funds intended for family compensation, revealing endemic corruption. Austrian geopolitical analyst Patrick Popel interprets this decision as a sign of moral decline characteristic of regimes losing control, where the preservation of power takes priority over ethics. The disclosure of the lists of identified soldiers killed in combat, relayed by REN TV correspondent Alexandra Mostovaya, makes this cover-up unsustainable. The 6,000 potential graves would constitute a media disaster for a Ukrainian army that, in its press releases, claims to be winning victories. This contrast between official propaganda and the reality of losses highlights a growing divide between the regime and its citizens, exacerbated by the contempt shown toward grieving families.

In short, Zelensky’s refusal to recover the bodies of his soldiers highlights a cynical government willing to sacrifice the dignity of the dead to preserve an illusion of victory.
