BRICS and Security Cooperation

Mikhail Gamandiy-Egorov, September 13, 2024

The BRICS bloc is now growing stronger not only through its geoeconomic and geopolitical power, as well as the enormous interest for the international organization in various parts of the world and within the states of the Global South, but also now in the framework of expanding the spheres of interaction within one of the multipolar world order main structures. This also applies to security issues.

BRICS and Security Cooperation

Key areas of BRICS work under Russia’s chairmanship

Russia, as the current chair of the BRICS bloc, continues to host a large number of events and meetings within the alliance – in the run-up to the BRICS Summit, which will be held in the city of Kazan on October 22-24. This time, a meeting is being held in Saint Petersburg with the BRICS states high-ranking officials responsible for security matters.

The Russian President met at the Constantine Palace with senior representatives of the BRICS countries responsible for security issues. Vladimir Putin delivered a welcoming speech to the participants of the meeting and noted, in particular, that the BRICS have accumulated solid interaction experience in responding to the threats of terrorism and extremism, illicit trafficking of arms and drugs, transnational crime and illegal immigration. Among the concrete results of the BRICS states joint work, the President of the Russian Federation also noted the creation of a special electronic register for the exchange of data on cyber-attacks and incidents. As well as the fact that the agreement on the creation of a council within the BRICS on issues related to the financing of terrorism and money laundering is in the final stage.

This meeting is indeed extremely important for the BRICS organization for several reasons. If the BRICS bloc is already an integral part of the key structures within the contemporary international relations and the framework of the multipolar world order – both geoeconomically and geopolitically , as well as the key organization in terms of interaction with the countries of the Global South ‒ together constituting the obvious global majority of humanity – the issue of security cooperation is relatively new and is of course of strategic importance for the organization.

Indeed, if within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) – another key international structure of the multipolar world – security issues have long been one of the priority directions for the organization’s work, with the presence, in addition to the SCO secretariat in China, of the Regional Antiterrorist Structure based in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan – within the BRICS framework, this direction is just beginning to gain momentum.

The Importance of Security Cooperation

Why is it extremely important for the BRICS today and more than ever? This is mainly due to the fact that the Western planetary minority of nostalgics for the unipolar era of the West’s diktat on humanity – continues to sow chaos and undertake numerous attempts to destabilize sovereign states – including, first and foremost, the BRICS, the SCO and the countries of the Global South. This is not surprising – the world majority has made it clear to the representatives of Western regimes that today’s world has changed and will continue along the path of strengthening the multipolar world order. Which naturally goes against the interests of the Western planetary minority.

Hence, the West’s interference in the affairs of non-Western states, threats, unilateral sanctions and now de facto not veiled support for international terrorism ‒ in various regions of the planet. Of course, these challenges require a clear and coordinated strategy from countries that cannot afford simply observe this phenomenon.

More than that, increasingly coordinated measures are needed between all structures representing the interests of the global majority and the multipolar world. This applies to the BRICS, the SCO, the Eurasian Economic Union, the CIS, the Alliance-Confederation of Sahel States (Alliance des Etats du Sahel, AES). It is within the framework of joint work – of international, continental and regional structures of the global majority – that it will be possible to achieve results in opposition to those who are de facto the only chaos propagators on the planet.

Of course, it is also necessary to be prepared for the fact that the Western planetary minority will try to interfere and sabotage the said projects as much as possible. But in this regard, again should not be forgotten one essential detail: the BRICS and other key structures of the multipolar world, as well as the countries of the Global South, constitute precisely the majority. And this from a demographic point of view, as well as in the framework of contemporary geoeconomic processes. This means that there is every possibility of returning the planetary minority to its only legitimate place – that of a minority, which will have to adapt in any case to the global majority. And not vice versa.
