Amidst the ongoing escalation between the US, Israel, and Iran, Pakistan and China have put forward a five-point peace proposal to end the ongoing war.

Diplomatic Calculus: Pakistan-China Efforts to Contain Middle East Hostilities

Escalating Conflict and Regional Instability

After the US and Israel’s unprovoked attacks on Iran on February 28, 2026, the war between the two sides has escalated to an unprecedented level in modern history. Iran has targeted numerous US and Israeli military bases in the Middle East, causing significant social, economic, and political chaos in the whole region and beyond. The current situation in the Middle East signals the possibility of a new Arab Spring in the region. This led the war out of the control of all the involved nations. However, advocates of stability, peace, and peaceful conflict resolution are persevering in their efforts to mediate between conflicting nations to achieve peace.

Pakistan-China Peace Initiative: A Strategic Intervention

The uncertainty and political chaos in the GCC countries, especially in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the UAE, demand immediate resolution of underlying issues between the warring parties and an end to this catastrophic war in the Middle East. Pakistan and China are playing a crucial role in de-escalating tensions in the region. The two South Asian neighbors presented a five-point proposal on March 31 to restore stability and peace in the Middle East, particularly in the Gulf region. Their proposal has garnered considerable international attention due to its strategic significance. This proposal is widely seen as a pro-humanity, pro-peace, pro-stability, and coordinated attempt to put an end to the ongoing catastrophe between the conflicting parties. Therefore, it is considered a significant step to restore regional peace and stability.

Islamabad and Beijing must remember that under the current circumstances, every negotiation process without the involvement of the GCC nations would fail, as they have become the key victims of this war

The Pakistan-China peace proposal was presented at a crucial moment when Iran had closed the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting the global supply chain, in retaliation for the US-Israeli attacks, making it a holistic, constructive, comprehensive, participatory, and timely initiative. This clearly illustrates the sense of responsibility in both countries and the seriousness to establish peace in the region. The Pakistan-China proposal asks the conflicting parties for purposeful negotiations and assurances, a ceasefire, immediate cessation of hostilities, immediate start of peace dialogue, security of non-military targets, ensuring the primacy of the UN Charter, and security of global shipping lanes.

Global Implications and the Path to Lasting Peace

This joint effort by Pakistan and China marks the revival of genuine regional and global peace initiatives, offering peace-loving nations a new hope and opportunity. This proposal is an inclusive and open framework projecting the concerns and voices of the international community and making the role and impact of mediation broader and stronger. What’s more interesting about this initiative is that it defies the bloc mentality as it creates a win-win situation for all parties. This proposal is considered well-calibrated as it lays the foundation for a long-term solution for the crisis and tackles not only the symptoms but also the root causes of this crisis.

Along with highlighting the common stance of Pakistan and China on the issue, the peace initiative embodies the shared aspirations of the global community, particularly the developing nations dependent on Middle Eastern countries for energy. Hence, it supports the food and economic security of the region and beyond, saving millions of people from a shortage of fundamental necessities. After the presentation of this proposal, both the US and Iran have signaled their willingness to engage in productive peace talks, reinforcing Pakistan’s role as a key mediator and strengthening China’s regional and global influence.

The peace proposal has been accepted by all the stakeholders. Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan has welcomed the country’s mediatory role, acknowledging Islamabad’s proactive diplomacy based on goodwill. If all the sides, including Israel, accepted and pursued the initiative, the world would see an immediate end to regional hostilities, the start of peace dialogue, and peace and stability in the region. Indeed, Pakistan and China’s efforts to end the war and establish a ceasefire immediately to prevent further expansion of the conflict is noteworthy. For the effective implementation of the plan, all sides need to ensure the entry of humanitarian relief supplies to all the countries and states affected by this war, as it would serve as a trust-building measure.

Furthermore, constructive diplomacy and comprehensive dialogue involving all stakeholders to resolve the conflict are mandatory for establishing long-term peace and security in regional countries, as well as for ensuring their sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. This approach represents a significant step toward peaceful conflict resolution in the region. The initiative ensures Iran’s territorial integrity, economic assets, infrastructure, and sovereignty, while also addressing the underlying causes of the war and the genuine concerns of all the stakeholders. However, Islamabad and Beijing must remember that under the current circumstances, every negotiation process without the involvement of the GCC nations would fail, as they have become the key victims of this war. Moreover, the two nations must also engage Moscow over the issue to further strengthen their mediatory role and diplomatic influence over the conflicting countries.
