Minnesota Crisis: A Mirror of American Politics

Mohammed Amer, February 08, 2026

The simmering civil war in the United States risks turning into an open confrontation by the November elections.

murders of U.S. citizens in Minnesota

For virtually the entire month of January 2026, American media focused on the clashes in Minnesota between protesters demanding a curb on the “excessive actions” of immigration officials deporting illegal immigrants and the Federal National Guard deployed to the state. Two people were killed, and several were wounded.

The Democratic press demanded a serious investigation and punishment for those responsible, claiming that the Secretary of Homeland Security is making “unfounded and provocative statements” instead of providing evidence. On January 25, The New York Times published an editorial headlined The Trump Administration Is Lying to Our Faces. Congress Must Act.” Even one Republican senator called for a full-scale joint federal-regional investigation.

Another Shutdown Is Coming

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer has made it clear that his party will not support a budget vote in the coming days, which could lead to another shutdown—that is, a government shutdown due to a lack of funds.

The Democratic-leaning press has launched a near-frontal assault on the Trump administration, accusing the president and his associates of every mortal sin. The aforementioned New York Times, in an article on January 23rd titled “The Coming Trump Crackup,” accuses the US president of leading the country to collapse: first, the disintegration of the post-war international order; second, the undermining of domestic peace “wherever Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents set foot;” third, the collapse of the democratic order, accompanied by attacks on the independence of the Federal Reserve System; and fourth, the destruction of President Trump’s psyche. The latter conclusion is crucial, as narcissism sometimes worsens with age, as remaining inhibitions fade.

Robert Fico accused Politico of lying

It’s noteworthy that Trump’s opponents, both within the US and abroad, are uniting in their efforts to discredit him, with particular emphasis on the president’s age. This involves both overt provocation and outright slander. In late January, the American publication Politico, which has ties to Western European institutions, reported that Slovak Prime Minister R. Fico, during a recent meeting with Donald Trump, was “shocked by the latter’s psychological state” and then, at a meeting of EU leaders on January 22 in Brussels, shared his impressions with some of them. R. Fico immediately refuted this claim, accusing Politico of fabricating a lie: “There were persistent attempts to disrupt my visit to the United States, as well as my visit to Russia. I agree with many of the US President’s strategies, but not all of them.” The Slovak Prime Minister called the invitation to Trump’s Florida residence “a sign of high respect and trust” on Trump’s part and the meeting with him “informal and open.” The White House also described the talks with R. Fico as “positive and productive.”

It is telling that calls are being heard in several European countries to move this year’s World Cup from the United States; former FIFA President Platini recently joined these calls.

Do the interests of the elite come first?

Trump’s foreign policy has been harshly criticized in various American media outlets as inconsistent and irrational. It is claimed that it has become a tool for siphoning money for Trump and his closest associates: national interests are overshadowed by the interests of the elite, and the system of privileges benefits members of the Trump family—their personal wealth has increased by at least $4 billion since the election. It is emphasized that America’s foreign policy elite has transformed from a group of prim bureaucratic structures into a royal family.

While tariffs have failed to revive manufacturing jobs, they have served as a tool for incentivizing countries and companies to “tithe”: South Korea and Japan have jointly pledged to invest hundreds of billions of dollars, and Vietnam has expedited approval for the construction of a $1.5 billion golf course for the Trump family, while simultaneously attempting to lower tariffs. Even leaders like Macron and Merz are inclined to flatter Trump rather than openly oppose him. To highlight Trump’s irresponsible decision on Minnesota, Thomas Friedman compares his actions to Netanyahu’s policy in Gaza: “These terrible leaders prefer easy, violent solutions to the difficult process of negotiating problems.”

Following large demonstrations in Minnesota against the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, Trump’s approval ratings plummeted. The White House decided to back down slightly, recalling the most zealous immigration officials from Minnesota. And although Trump reaffirmed his confidence in the Secretary of Homeland Security, rumors of her possible resignation have surfaced in many media outlets.

November Congressional Elections in Question

The polarization of the domestic political situation in the United States is becoming increasingly apparent. Some political scientists are directly or indirectly suggesting that the Democratic Party’s successful congressional campaign is alarming many Republicans: even Trump has mentioned the possibility of a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives. Therefore, some observers conclude, the president could, under any pretext, cancel the November 2026 elections altogether.

January 27, 2026: Well-known American journalist Tucker Carlson (an active supporter of MAGA) expressed concern on his YouTube channel about the threat of the US’s disintegration, noting that the first signs of an imminent civil war are already rumbling on the streets of Minneapolis: “We are witnessing the collapse of the social fabric of the government and, perhaps, the entire country. This is one of the most serious moments of our lifetime. This is the worst thing that can happen.”
