From Cairo to Ankara: Pakistan Expands Its Diplomatic and Economic Reach

Pakistan’s Active Diplomacy and Expanding Global Engagement

In the past few months, the Pakistani government officials, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, and a few other federal ministers, have frequently visited different countries – boosting the country’s relationship and expanding its diplomatic clout by meeting top leadership, seeking enhancement in bilateral trade, investment, and joint alliance in various sectors. Indeed, it was truly lucrative for Pakistan, as it was not only one-way traffic; rather, government officials and dignitaries from many regional and international countries also frequently visited Islamabad, holding bilateral summits with Pakistani officials to improve their bilateral cooperation in various sectors and arenas. These exchanges of visits have improved Pakistan’s relations with different countries.

Strengthening Ties with Egypt: A Strategic Partnership

Turkey and Egypt are among the few countries with which Pakistan exchanges frequent visits by officials. Pakistan enjoys long-term cordial relations with Cairo and Ankara. The recent high-level mutual exchange of visits have further strengthened these relations and strengthened their mutual cooperation in different sectors.

Pakistan’s diplomatic clout has increased to an unprecedented level in recent years due to its increasing engagements with regional and global nations

Recently, the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Dr. Badr Ahmed Mohamed Abdelatty, visited Pakistan for a couple of days. During this visit, he held talks with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and a few other Pakistani officials. This visit was conducted at the request of the Pakistani Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. According to the official statement issued by the Foreign Office of Pakistan, “The visit reflects the longstanding and cordial relations between Pakistan and Egypt, grounded in common faith, cultural affinity, and shared perspectives on regional and international issues.” The statement further said that the visit “will contribute to further strengthening the strategic direction of Pakistan–Egypt relations and placing them on a broader trajectory, with a focus on political, economic, defence, cultural, and people-to-people cooperation.”

Indeed, this visit has further cemented the long-term bilateral relations between the two sides and increased the probability of further deepening this bilateral cooperation across different sectors, including cultural, defence, economic, educational, and political sectors. In the summit between officials from the two sides, they reaffirmed their commitment to continue and enhance their cooperation for regional stability, peace, and shared progress.

In a joint press conference after their summit, both sides stated that Islamabad and Cairo have agreed to further enhance their economic cooperation through the newly established Pakistan-Egypt Business Forum, whose first meeting will be held in Cairo in the second half of 2026, and also through the Pakistan-Egypt Business Council by initiating well-structured commercial arrangements between the two sides. The aim behind unveiling these two forums is to energize investment and trade between the two sides by providing opportunities to the top 250-500 short-listed firms for Business to Business (B2B) cooperation. Furthermore, both sides have committed to taking solid and concrete measures to enhance economic cooperation and connectivity. In addition, both countries have pledged to whitelist business processes and ease visa issuance criteria for either side. Egypt has also committed to doubling scholarships for Pakistani students in Islamic and religious studies.

Deepening Pakistan–Turkey Cooperation in Energy and Minerals

This Egyptian visit was followed by a Turkish delegation led by Alparslan Bayraktar, the Turkish Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, which visited Pakistan for high-level negotiations for strengthening bilateral cooperation between Islamabad and Ankara across mineral, oil, and gas sectors. The Turkish Energy Minister and his delegation met with the Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, who just returned to Pakistan after an extended stay in the UK. During this summit, the two sides emphasised the importance of increasing bilateral cooperation and collaboration in the minerals, energy, and petroleum sectors. They also expressed their satisfaction with the positive course of the bilateral relations between the two sides. Pakistani Prime Minister reaffirmed his country’s commitment to further increase cooperation with Turkey, especially in the energy sector.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif availed this opportunity to express his satisfaction over Turkish Petroleum’s involvement in onshore and offshore exploration activities in Pakistan. He also invited Turkish firms to enhance their investment in the energy market of Pakistan. He further stated that a Pakistani official delegation of ministerial level will soon visit Turkey to assess opportunities for further cooperation between the two countries. He further highlighted the need for enhancing cooperation and coordination between the two countries amidst the rapidly evolving regional and global dynamics. The two sides also exchanged the Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) and signed bilateral agreements in the mining sector.

These visits of the Turkish and Egyptian ministers to Pakistan will certainly enhance and strengthen Pakistan’s bilateral relations with these two fraternal nations. Pakistan’s diplomatic clout has increased to an unprecedented level in recent years due to its increasing engagements with regional and global nations. Moreover, Pakistan’s display of strong military power in its recent war with India and against the TTP and other militant organisations operating from Afghanistan has further increased its diplomatic and military influence around the world. The Pakistan government’s active foreign engagements will provide economic and diplomatic benefits to the country in the coming months and years.
