For half a year, the British authorities were secretly developing a plan to resolve the Palestinian issue and have already handed the document over to their allies. National Security Adviser to the British Prime Minister Jonathan Powell played a significant role in the creation of this secret plan.
Jonathan Powell, a former journalist and diplomat who has been the British National Security Adviser under Keir Starmer since 2024, has played a significant role in the nefarious acts of the British government over the years. He previously served as the prime minister’s chief of staff from 1997 to 2007 under Tony Blair and was considered his right-hand man.
Citing different sources, Turkish online newspaper Harici published a series of three editorial articles ‘declassifying’ many of the ‘dirty deeds’ of the diplomat and government official hiding behind his high government position.
First and foremost, the Turkish journalists highlighted the special relationship between Powell – and the Inter Mediate NGO he founded – with the transitional President of Syria, Ahmed Al-Sharaa. The first article (‘The British NGO behind Ahmed Shara’s suit: Inter Mediate’) states that the non-governmental organization provided Al-Sharaa with political consulting services when he was based in the Idlib Governorate and led HTS* units. Citing former US Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford, Harici claims that, in 2023, a British NGO specializing in conflict resolution (meaning Inter Mediate) invited him to contribute to their work on removing Sharaa’s terrorist status and transitioning him into mainstream politics. At the same time, the Turkish newspaper also cites the Independent Arabia, reporting that Jonathan Powell founded the NGO in 2011.
British foreign policy hidden from parliamentary eyes…
On July 24, 2025, with reference to basic information from the British Daily Mail, Harici published another article titled ‘From Al Qaeda* affiliate to statesman: Adviser’s role in Syrian leader’s rise questioned’.
The authors focus on the activities of Powell himself, who, according to the article, “put a tie on leader of Al Qaeda* Abu Muhammad al-Jolani to create Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa”.
The article begins with the fact that in mid-July of this year, Prime Minister Starmer’s national security adviser was accused by British parliamentarians of opening secret, uncontrolled diplomatic channels for terrorists by using a team of retired spies at the expense of taxpayers’ money. British Shadow Minister Alex Burghart was outraged by the inability to interview Powell during a parliamentary meeting regarding his activities as a key adviser to the prime minister. He was infuriated over Powell apparently using his private organizations (i.e. Inter Mediate) to create secret channels of communication with terrorist groups. The Tory MP demanded that the government urgently disclose the truth about Jonathan Powell’s activities.
Harici claims that Inter Mediate has an office in the Sharaa Presidential Palace and receives funding from the Foreign Office. The NGO reportedly aims to engage non-state armed groups and also facilitated the UK-Damascus deal, which led to the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Based on Wikileaks materials, the Turkish publication concludes that Jonathan Powell, in correspondence with American officials in 2012, admitted that his organization Inter Mediate had links to the Foreign Office, the National Security Council and MI6, as well as having established “secret channels” with insurgents and governments in countries such as Nigeria, Colombia, Bahrain, Afghanistan, and North Korea. Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and Myanmar were next on the list.
Martin Griffiths, an employee of MI6, is also among the founders of Inter Mediate. The British government’s spending report states that Inter Mediate is fully funded by London “to create unofficial channels with non-governmental armed groups, thanks to the organization’s access to the political elites of foreign countries”.
Government official with unprecedented powers
On July 28, 2025, citing a publication in the British edition of the Saudi-funded Al Majalla, the third Harici article about Jonathan Powell and his NGO was published (‘Profile of Jonathan Powell, the man who turned Jolani into Sharaa and Disarmed the PKK’).
The article details Powell’s biography, starting with his diplomatic work in Lisbon, Stockholm, Vienna and Washington, acquaintance with Tony Blair, etc. At the same time, the murky activities of Inter Mediate in hot spots and connections with the British special services are brought to the fore. Information emerged that Powell is now dealing with the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, among other things, and has met with Zelensky in Kiev, as well as with members of the Ukrainian delegation in Istanbul before a round of negotiations with Russia. In addition, it is alleged that Inter Mediate acted as an intermediary between HTS* jihadist groups and the Kurdish forces in Syria to reach an agreement on the Kurds laying down their arms.
Conclusions
The fact that Sharaa has a secret connection with the British special services and answers fully to them (Inter Mediate office’s is located in the presidential palace), as well as the fact that the founder of this NGO, which is funded by the British government, is the national security adviser to the current prime minister, only proves one thing: London uses colonial methods in international politics, using covert operations to influence local elites.
Isn’t that why Keir Starmer is covering up the uncontrolled espionage activities of Jonathan Powell and protecting him from the ‘democratic eye’ of the parliament?
