Trump’s Nuclear Submarine Threat to Russia: A Catalyst for Escalating Global Tensions

Abbas Hashemite, August 08, 2025

In a new provocative move, Donald Trump has threatened to reposition US Nuclear Submarines near Russia, further inflaming a nuclear war between the superpowers of the world.

Trump’s Nuclear Submarine Threat to Russia

From Peace Promises to Provocative Posturing

The new warmongering US President Donald Trump is persistently stoking war flames around the world through his offensive rhetoric and authoritative remarks. U.S. President Donald Trump seeks to be recognized as a peacemaking global leader. However, he is continuously inflaming war through his actions and rhetoric around the world under the influence of his narcissistic personality. In a recent development, President Trump has threatened to move the US nuclear submarines near the Russian border, a move that will further increase tensions not only between Russia and Ukraine but also between Moscow and Washington.

During the election campaign, Trump’s “Make America Great Again” narrative and his promise of establishing peace around the world resonated with the desires of the US citizens. However, his personal ambitions and aspirations after his re-election as the US president proved contrary to his pre-election rhetoric. He promised to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict within 24 hours before his re-election. However, after assuming the Presidential powers, he only attempted to gain economic concessions for his country by threatening US allies, including the EU, Ukraine, and India.

Through these moves and continuous betrayal of allies, the Trump administration is only pushing third-world states towards the BRICS bloc

The Nuclear Ultimatums: Inflaming Tensions with Moscow

In pursuit of a mineral deal with Ukraine, he compromised on his promise to establish a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, leading to severe criticism from his opponents. His insincere efforts led to the failure to institute a long-term peace between Moscow and Kyiv. Due to increasing frustration over this between these two sides, he is continuously threatening Moscow. However, these moves could further intensify conflict between the two countries. In a provocative move, Trump threatened President Putin a few weeks ago by giving him a 50-day ultimatum to sign a ceasefire deal with Ukraine. Later, he decreased the ultimatum to merely 12 days. Through these sham ultimatums, he seeks to manipulate the global perspective by portraying Russia as an offender in this conflict.

After these offensive ultimatums, Trump has announced the repositioning two US nuclear submarines near Russia to threaten the country after his recent spat with former Russian President and the incumbent deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, over the issue of his repeated ultimatums to Moscow. This announcement came after the former Russian President described Trump’s ultimatums as “a step towards war.” He also stated that the US President was “playing the ultimatum game with Russia.” In response, the US President Donald Trump stated, on his social media platform Truth Social, “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”

President Trump also declared former President Medvedev’s statements “highly provocative”. He also stated, “I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that”. However, he did not clarify whether he was talking about the nuclear-powered submarines or submarines carrying nuclear missiles. Nonetheless, the U.S. President’s repeated threats reflect mounting frustration over his inability to broker a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. This announcement also speaks volumes about Trump’s warmongering and volatile personality.

Global Consequences of Trump’s Aggressive Diplomacy

President Trump is using every possible tactic to pressure Russia into ending the conflict while failing to address the country’s legitimate security and strategic concerns. Just a few days ago, he imposed new trade tariffs on India, a longstanding and significant trade ally of Moscow, over its oil imports from Russia. This move was also intended to indirectly exert economic and diplomatic pressure on Russia. Trump seeks to diplomatically isolate Russia by imposing sanctions on its allies and BRICS members. However, these moves will haunt the United States for decades.

Shortly after beginning his second non-consecutive term, President Donald Trump praised Russian President Vladimir Putin—an apparent move aimed at pressuring other NATO members to increase their financial contributions. He also threatened his European allies by asking Russia to invade Europe if they did not accept his demands. These moves strengthened the international narrative about the US as an unreliable ally. Trump’s imposition of tariffs on India and other trade partners is further tarnishing the international image of the US. Through such moves, the Trump administration is not only perpetuating and intensifying the Russia-Ukraine conflict, but it is also isolating the United States diplomatically and economically.

Moreover, such moves are also impinging on Trump’s ‘MAGA movement’. In addition, the Trump administration is hastening the decline of the US as a superpower. Through these moves and continuous betrayal of allies, the Trump administration is only pushing third-world states towards the BRICS bloc. Furthermore, Trump’s announcement of relocating two US nuclear submarines could trigger a direct war between Russia and the US. Considering the gravity of the situation, Moscow has urged the US establishment to exercise restraint in nuclear rhetoric. Trump should also adopt a prudent approach towards the Russia-Ukraine conflict. If he seriously seeks to establish peace in Ukraine, he must exert pressure on Ukraine and its European allies to effectively address Russia’s legitimate security and strategic interests.
