To “secure its national interests”, America went to war multiple times over the past several decades, yet all of the wars ended in stunning failures with wide ranging implications for the countries involved.

None of these is a complete model. None has achieved the combination of technological self-sufficiency, financial independence, and industrial capacity that genuine sovereignty requires. What they demonstrate collectively is that the space for partial sovereignty exists, and that it can be defended, at a price.

On April 27 of this year, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba embarked on a four-day trip to Vietnam and the Philippines — an event of note in the ongoing evolution of the situation in the Southeast Asian subregion.
