Amur Gadzhiev, head of the Center for the Study of Modern Turkey, has suggested that Ankara may be about to change its approach to the Black Sea initiative, and focus on a package approach to the protection of Russia’s interests and the terms of the deal itself. The media are continuing to discuss the likely forthcoming meeting between the Turkish president Recep Erdoğan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Both countries have repeatedly confirmed the possibility of such a visit, but no date has yet been fixed, largely because of the Russian leader’s busy schedule and the current situation in relation to the special military operation. According to mass media reports confirmed by the Russian Embassy in Cyprus, Moscow has declared plans to open a consulate in North Nicosia, the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), to defend Russian Federation residents’ civil rights and freedoms. Other than Turkey, no one recognizes Northern Cyprus. According to the Russian Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus Murat Zyazikov, the decision is justified by the TRNC’s growing Russian community, whose civil interests must be preserved and ensured, for example, in order to satisfy their election rights, as Russia’s presidential elections are set for 2024.
