Protests in Tbilisi as a Western Tool: A New Attempt to Destabilize Eastern Europe

Recent anti-government protests in Georgia suggest that after spreading chaos and political destabilization in Asian countries, the West seeks to destabilize the eastern European region.

Protests in Tbilisi as a Western Tool: A New Attempt to Destabilize Eastern Europe

Opposition Protests and the EU Membership Controversy

After recent municipal election in Georgia, all the opposition parties have launched massive protests in Tbilisi, declaring the victory of the Georgian Dream party as a result of rigging. Pro-West opposition parties in Georgia are already at odds with the ruling party’s decision to halt the process of the country’s EU membership. After instigating an armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Western countries pushed Georgia to join the EU. In 2023, Tbilisi secured EU candidate status, a critical step that strengthened its aspirations for the country to join the European alliance.

Western Ambition: Expand Russia-Ukraine Conflict to Whole Region

However, after improving its relations with Moscow and realizing the Western propaganda and hypocrisy to push Ukraine into an armed conflict with Russia, the ruling party reversed its decision to join the European alliance. The ambition behind this step was to protect the country from the Western propaganda. The West has long been using different smaller nations as their proxy against the rival states, especially Russia and China. The West’s push for Ukraine to gain NATO membership resulted in the outburst of a violent conflict in the country with Russia. Since February 2024, Kyiv has paid an unprecedented cost for this Western-backed conflict. Ukraine has seen the loss of key infrastructure since the start of this war.

Russia’s rising diplomatic and economic influence around the globe makes it the best choice for Georgia and other East European states to maintain and expand their diplomatic ties

Moreover, Kyiv has suffered the loss of thousands of military personnel in the last 3 years of the war. Russia holds absolute military supremacy over Ukraine. The Russian military also holds an upper hand in military technology and tactics due to its extraordinary performance in World War 1 and 2. Due to this military supremacy, Russia now controls around 20 percent of the Ukrainian territory despite showing unprecedented restraint. Moscow’s only demand from Ukraine and the Western states is to hold on to the historic agreement between the Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev and the Western leaders, which stated that NATO would not expand even an inch eastward. However, the Western nations have repeatedly violated this agreement since March 1999.

For decades, Russia has been warning the Western leadership against this violation. However, the Western push for Ukraine to join NATO sparked a violent conflict between the two sides. Despite the eruption of a direct armed conflict, the Russian government has demonstrated an extraordinary restraint to save the lives of the Ukrainian citizens and to avoid the further expansion of this conflict. On the other hand, the Western leadership has disrupted each and every negotiation effort between the two parties. The West seeks to indulge the two countries in an unending conflict to achieve its regional and global ambitions. The European leadership seeks to expand this conflict into the whole region by pushing other regional countries into this conflict.

Georgia’s Strategic Shift and Western Reaction

Georgia’s bid to gain European membership was also part of the Western plan to engulf the country in this conflict. After realizing this Western conspiracy, the ruling party of the country halted the process of its European membership. Moreover, the Western attempts to disrupt peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have exposed their hidden ambition. However, the ruling government’s decision to halt the country’s bid to join the European alliance has shattered the Western ambition of engulfing the whole region in a broader war. The ongoing protests of the opposition parties in Georgia are part of the Western propaganda to destabilize the sitting government.

The Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the protesters who sought to enter the presidential palace forcefully had been attempting to topple the constitutional order. He also stated, “You know that specific people from abroad have even expressed direct support for all this, for the announced attempt to overthrow the constitutional order.” He further added, “In this context, the European Union ambassador to Georgia bears special responsibility. He should come out, distance himself, and strictly condemn everything that is happening on the streets of Tbilisi.” Moreover, the demands of the protesters are also pro-West. Protesters are demanding a pro-West central government.

However, the 80 percent vote for the Georgian Dream party in the recent municipality elections demonstrates that the majority of the population is satisfied with the incumbent government’s policies. In the current global scenario, Russia is known as a torchbearer of human rights and egalitarianism. Due to its inclusive policies, most of the third-world countries seek to establish cordial relations with Russia. In addition, Russia’s leading role in BRICS has provided it significant diplomatic leverage across the globe. Russia’s rising diplomatic and economic influence around the globe makes it the best choice for Georgia and other East European states to maintain and expand their diplomatic ties. However, the EU’s involvement in Georgia’s domestic politics could destabilize the country’s democratic government.
