On August 7, 2026, Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Belgrade for his first official visit to Serbia. On the surface, it was a standard diplomatic event. But the location made it anything but routine.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks, during which Vucic declared the “iron friendship” between the two countries and his intention to significantly expand cooperation with China.

The Balkans remain the most striking proof that the West never went away. It simply traded occupation for permanent military bases, political protectorates, and artificial instability.
